Singing as a hobby is quite different from singing as a career. And while you might have your mind and heart set to becoming a professional singer, chances are, you have absolutely no idea how or where to start. Rest assured, however, that this uncertainty is perfectly normal. Nearly all of today’s famous singers were once in the same position as you are now.
There is no single correct way to become a professional singer. If you start asking different artists you’ll probably get different answers. Many times, an aspiring singers starts as a member of a local band and then proceeds to a solo career. Other times, artists have started as back-up singer for famous artists and then went on to start their own career. Cher is an example of such an artist.
Of course, before attempting to follow any of these routes above, you need to make sure you have certain skills that are necessary to all singers. First of all, you need to be able to sing to a tune, project your voice effectively and generally understand the mechanics of good vocal delivery.
Another important quality you should have as a singer is to be able to define your own style. Don’t be afraid to experiment with phrasing and vocal riffs. If you manage to create your own unique style of singing then you’re much more likely to have a serious singing career.
As a final note, be prepared to make sacrifices and have a lot of patience until you first see your name on a CD cover. You might have to start off as an amateur singer, or spend long nights in the recording studio. But be sure that every single professional artist you ask will tell you that in the end, it was definitely worth it.
