Fleetwood Mac Biography And Top 10 Songs

I probably started listening to Fleetwood Mac when I was about 10, 11 or something like that because I remember getting their Greatest Hits album and it had only just been released and at the time I didn’t really know who they were but because I always listen to all sorts of music people just used to buy me music instead of toys. When I listened to it I knew most of the tracks and I now think of it as one of my top 20 albums of all time.

Fleetwood Mac are an English/American cross breed who formed in 1967 in London. The group have gone through far too many changes in members to list them all but the most notable members of Fleetwood Mac are, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

Fleetwood Mac are probably one of the most hard working bands of all time and have released many albums (sometimes three or four in a year). 1968 saw the releases of Carousel Ballroom, Mr Wonderful and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. In 1969 there were four albums, English Rose, Live In Amsterdam, The Pious Bird Of Good Omen and Then Play On.

Only one album was released in 1970 which was Kiln House, one in 1971, Future Games and one in 1972, Bare Tree. Mystery To Me and Penguin were released in 1973. Heroes are Hard to Find in 1974 and another two released in 1975, Fleetwood Mac which contained the hits Rhiannon, Say You Love Me and Landslide and In Chicago which again was a great album and a compilation. In 1977 they released the collaboration album Fleetwood Mac And Christine Perfect – Albatross which contained the massive hit Albatross and they also released another of their most successful albums the same year which was Rumours and is another of my favourite albums of all time and contains the songs You Can Go Your Own Way and You Make Loving Fun.

In 1979 Fleetwood Mac released Tusk and the song of the same name became another huge success along with the songs Sara and Think About Me and the album has sold over 4 million copies and they went on a tour of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, France, Belgium, Germany (where they toured with bob Marley), Netherlands, and the UK. During the tour they recorded the music for the Live album which was released in 1980.

Mirage was released in 1982 and contained the hits Wish You Were Here, Gypsy and Oh Diane. After this release they went on tour again and released the Boston Live album. 1987 was the release of Tango In The Night which went to #1 in the UK charts three times in one year and after this album Lindsey Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac. In the following Decade they released several more albums (Greatest Hits, The Blues Collection, Behind The Mask, 25 Years – The Chain, Oh Well Live, The Blues Years, Time, Live At The BBC and The Dance (which saw the reunion of the old Fleetwood Mac).

In 1998 Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and it is reported that they will be collaborating with Sheryl Crow in 2009 and there are plans for a new album and a supporting tour.

So You Wanna Become A Professional Singer

Singing as a hobby is quite different from singing as a career. And while you might have your mind and heart set to becoming a professional singer, chances are, you have absolutely no idea how or where to start. Rest assured, however, that this uncertainty is perfectly normal. Nearly all of today’s famous singers were once in the same position as you are now.

There is no single correct way to become a professional singer. If you start asking different artists you’ll probably get different answers. Many times, an aspiring singers starts as a member of a local band and then proceeds to a solo career. Other times, artists have started as back-up singer for famous artists and then went on to start their own career. Cher is an example of such an artist.

Of course, before attempting to follow any of these routes above, you need to make sure you have certain skills that are necessary to all singers. First of all, you need to be able to sing to a tune, project your voice effectively and generally understand the mechanics of good vocal delivery.

Another important quality you should have as a singer is to be able to define your own style. Don’t be afraid to experiment with phrasing and vocal riffs. If you manage to create your own unique style of singing then you’re much more likely to have a serious singing career.

As a final note, be prepared to make sacrifices and have a lot of patience until you first see your name on a CD cover. You might have to start off as an amateur singer, or spend long nights in the recording studio. But be sure that every single professional artist you ask will tell you that in the end, it was definitely worth it.

Why Play The Piano The Pentatonic Way?

The prefix “penta-” means five and “tonic” in the musical sense means the first note in a scale. So the definition of the word “pentatonic” is a musical scale made up of five notes.

Learning to play the piano the pentatonic way –

Involves only the playing of five different notes. As it happens, those five notes correspond exactly to the five black keys on a piano.

Uses many recognizable and favorite melodies. Many folk songs, hymns, and even rock and classical songs are based on the pentatonic scale.

Allows a beginner to develop technical skills first. Because only five notes are involved the beginner can concentrate on hand position and moving the fingers efficiently while learning songs before starting the process of note and music reading.

Encourages the use of both hands in a melody and accompaniment relationship. Because technical and listening skills are developed first, playing with both hands from the beginning is promoted.

Creativity and exploration of the keyboard within the relationship of the five notes in melody and accompaniment patterns is encouraged. Since the beginner is not bogged down with learning the concepts and skills of note reading and the language of music, inventiveness and originality are hallmarks of the method.

Is immediately satisfying. The novice pianist starts playing melodies with accompaniments very quickly. For most any adult learner being able to play more than simple nursery rhyme melodies one finger at a time is important. Those students using the pentatonic method play well-known melodies with interesting accompaniments from the first lessons.

Develops the ear. As the learner becomes more proficient with playing the pentatonic melodies, they “hear” more and more creative ways to enhance those melodies with unique accompaniment patterns.

Sounds great from the beginning. Because the pentatonic method uses only five notes and those five notes sound pleasing to the human ear when played in any combination with each other, the student produces pleasant music from the onset of their study.

Allows the person who wants to make music quickly. Because note reading is not necessary in the early stages of the pentatonic method, music making comes quickly.

Can be practiced away from the piano or keyboard instrument. The pentatonic method encourages the student to “play” their music in other environments from the table or desktop to the steering wheel. Developing facile technical skills is stressed from the beginning.

Encourages further exploration of the world of music. Learning to play the piano using the pentatonic method is a gratifying pleasant experience. Because of that fact, those students who start their study of the piano or find themselves relearning the piano with the pentatonic method move more easily into the realm of music reading and notation.

Why learn to play the piano the pentatonic way? Why not?

Freaky Styley Review

In 1985, Red Hot Chili Peppers released their second album, ?Freaky Styley.? The album saw their original guitarist, Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons rejoining the band for their first Chili Peppers album. Four singles was released from ?Freaky Styley?, namely ?Jungle Man?, ?American Ghost Dance?, ?Catholic School Girls Rule? and ?Hollywood (Africa)?.

The band had during the previous years built a reputation for being some of the hottest live artist in Los Angeles. Now that the original gang was back together, everything was perfectly paved out for the recording of the second Red Hot Chili Peppers album.

The album was produced by self proclaimed master of funk, George Clinton. Clinton?s funkiness contributed to the funkiest album the Chili Peppers have ever made. It seems like the combination of an immature Chili Peppers and Clinton, the grand daddy of funk, was a perfect match. You can really taste the start of Red Hot Chili Peppers trademark style on this album.

If you are looking for the Peppers that we all know today from albums such as Californication and Stadium Arcadium, you will probably be disappointed with Freaky Styley. It is an album which is a whole different story. The funky style is brought to a level that the Chili Peppers had not done before and have not done after. I?m not sure that any band has for that matter.

The vocals of Anthony Kiedis is not what you would expect from him when you know what he has done later, but it fits like a glove to Flea?s bass and Irons drum work on this album. In this stage of the bands growing process, they seemed mostly interested in delivering obscure sexual and other messages that is hard to understand. That?s why you shouldn?t put to much into getting a lot out of the lyrical messages on ?Freaky Styley?.

Putting yourself back in 1985 and hearing a song from Freaky Styley on the radio, you could probably imagine it being either rap group trying to get closer to rock, or a rock group trying to be a rap group. While you could place the Peppers in the last category, you have to understand that this was their natural way of expressing themselves. They were made for the funky style that Freaky Styley is all about. In the later years they have polished their style to fit a broader audience, but they have still maintained some of their natural funk instinct.

Having all this in mind, Freaky Style is really an enjoyable album. It really has no weak tracks. Even if it?s not one of the all time greats, it is absolutely an album you should not miss.

Cracking The Codes Behind The Ting Tings Lyrics And Musings

They stormed the local UK music scene with an unusual name and a unique tune. With beats that bring you back to the disco fever of the 70s, and wordplay that blows your mind, The Ting Tings are out and coming with not just a few crazy melodies, but a fine new breed of musicality, as well. The 2-man group of Katie White and Jules de Martino is not your typical band. Instead of joining the bandwagon of RnB and the noisy world of rock, The Ting Tings opted to make music the way they want it using their mix of disco and indie pop tunes. They sing about what they like and create notes that reflect their whims with the Ting Tings lyrics that have people go, ?Say what??.

The Ting Tings kicked it off worldwide with the release of their debut album We Started Nothing. From the very first track, you could already sense that this band means to be deviant in terms of style and their overall approach to music. Great DJ has an in-your-face, I-don?t-care rebel appeal to it that you just can?t ignore the lyrics, Fed up with your indigestion/Swallow your words one by one/Your folks got high at a quarter to five/Don?t you feel you?re growing up undone? The song reminds you of a nursery rhyme, the one that got you singing on your way home sans the light yet powerful drum beats.

Just when you think you?re already fired up with the first song, you stumble upon the next track, That?s Not My Name. The completely unusual mix of unconnected thoughts and mishmash of simple beats with the powerful vocals of Katie White earned this song a number of airplays. After bopping your head to the light beats, you get attacked by the wordiness of Fruit Machine. The song has feminazo undertones with words like Win, I don?t think so my foolish boy/ Watch the next one taking all the joy/ Hold me, nudge me, spinning me around/ Where?s the money?/Can?t hear that clinking. The mood is then lightened with a whimsical song that could almost pass as a piece from a musical. Traffic Light is fairly quiet compared to other songs in the album. Listening to it can give you images of traffic lights dancing and ballerinas prancing while the light guitar strums come blaring in the background.

Visions of traffic lights turn into strobe lights and feisty dancers as the next song comes in. Shut Up and Let Me Go, their definitive tune, can send you dancing and bopping your heads to the beats. Powerful and addictive, this is just one of those feel-good songs that you want listen to while driving on a Sunday morning. Keep Your Head hits you like a bullet with its synthesizers and cymbals. 80s kids would surely relate to the lyrics of the song that say Fourteen/ Intimidated/And she’s just fourteen/ She’s getting pulled/ From the opposite side/ Until it breaks down/ Blame it on/ The wrong crowd/ Stay, more make up/ Hair dye. Listening to the song as it fades leaves you feeling like you?re ready to take on the world armed with your known smile and hazy intentions.

We Walk opens with a melancholic piano solo with a sudden change in mood from sad to anger that reeks of confidence and woman empowerment. Who could ever go wrong with words that exude loving oneself. You see the changes/In things that come/It?s how you deal with it/When switching off/Make a decision/A precondition/We got a choice if it all goes wrong. The next tune, Be The One, channels the same 80s vibe as Keep Your Head has. Underneath the discotheque feel of the song is a very Freudian message cleverly hidden in a labyrinth of drum beats and synths as reflected in the lyrics, I don?t want to be the one/Only overjoyed/I don?t wanna be the one/Making all the noise.

Impacilla Carpisung dabbles with electronica with little lyrics for listeners to understand much less to think about. It?s give you downtime while you wait for the finale, We Started Nothing, a song that conglomerates deathly sad lyrics with powerfully happy beats. No one dropped of waiting in despair/Every time I go there, no one?s there/So tell me where?s the soul, oh!/ Where?s the soul/Submit it?s all locked up/So hard to lose control.

All in all, The Ting Tings? We Started Nothing listening experience leaves you with a playful and fun feel of indie pop at its finest. If you?re tired of the usual music playing on the radio, this album will definitely suit your fancy with its eclectic and unique arrangements of simple tunes, loud and raspy vocals and an overall feel-good appeal. It is a musical immersion that proves that the Ting Tings lyrics could anyone, fans and otherwise alike, hooked.

Black Sabbath – My Opinions

My Opinion

It is my pleasure to voice my comments about the mighty Black Sabbath. I count black Sabbath among the most influential musical acts in the rock genre and particularly hard the time when Sabbath was developing their act leading up to 1970 album Black Sabbath, there was nothing in that time frame that could be characterized as really heavy music. Led zeppelin at that period was heavier than most. Sabbath was tackling some of the same occult subjects that were loosely covered in some of Zeppelin?s earlier stuff. Sabbath was also adding a musical heaviness to match the dark subject matter they were writing about. When is comes to the members of the band, I don?t think anyone would say Ozzy was the best singer when Sabbath was first on the scene, but Tony Iommi?s down-tuned Gibson SG riffs were innovative in their heaviness. When you compare Ironman, one of sabbath?s premiere tunes, with any other song from that year there is no denying it was the heavier than anything. It was the beginning of heavy metal.

If you like Sabbath

If you like Sabbath and are trying to find similar bands, you can see Sabbath?s inspiration in any heavy band in the last 30 years. More recently High on Fire and their album Blessed Black Wings. If you are really into Sabbath and haven?t heard anything by Motorhead you need do not go another day without listening to them. There?s no denying if you are really into Black Sabbath then you will like Motorhead.

Cream of the Crop

Some of my personal favorite Black Sabbath songs are War Pigs and a lesser known song of Sabbath which I think everyone should check out is Supernaut off Black Sabbath Vol. 4. Other classics are Iron Man and Paranoid.

The members of Black Sabbath include Tony Iommi (guitar), John “Ozzy” Osbourne (vocals), Terry “Geezer” Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums). They were originally known as Earth, but changed their name to Black Sabbath in 1969. Their albums include Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Black Sabbath Vol. 4 Victor, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage Castle, Technical Ecstasy, and Never Say Die! .

Ukulele Strings: Which Do You Need?

There are so many different types of ukulele strings out there, it can be very confusing. I’ve ended up buying the wrong type of string in the past and so have many others.

The type of string you have on your uke can make a big difference to the sound. Usually, new ukuleles will come with low quality strings. With every ukulele I’ve bought, I’ve immediately changed the strings to a quality brand.

However, you need to be careful what you buy. Here are some things to consider:

Size

It is very important that you buy the right size of string to fit your ukulele. The thickness and length of the string differs depending on the size of ukulele.

If you have the standard, smallest size ukulele, make sure you buy soprano strings. If you have a tenor or baritone ukulele, make sure the strings are marked with that size.

Brand

Amongst most ukulele players, there is a general consensus that Aquila and Worth are the best strings around. You should definitely test out these two brands of strings to see which you prefer and provide a baseline if you want to test out other brands.

There are many other makes of ukulele string. Professional ukulelists endorse other brands. For example, Jake Shimabukuro has an endorsement deal with D’Addario and James Hill has Hilo strings on his re-entrant ukes.

Tuning

Different types of tuning require different types of string. The standard ukulele tuning is gCEA with the g-string pitched between the E and A strings (known as re-entrant). If the strings you are buying don’t state a tuning, it’s fairly safe to assume that this is the tuning.

Before you buy the strings, be sure to check they are not low-G strings (unless that’s what you’re looking for). It is not possible to tune low-G ukuleles to high-G and vice versa. However, you can use low-G tuning on a high-G uke (and vice versa) with a little modification (sometimes no modification at all is needed).

You’ll sometimes see strings intended for ADF#B tuning. This is the standard ukulele tuning but two frets higher. There’s very little difference between these two tunings and string sizes, so the strings you get for this tuning will be suitable for standard tuning.

Buying a quality set of ukulele strings is a wise investment. It’s by far the cheapest way to improve the sound of your ukulele and will make playing a more pleasant experience. Just be sure to double check that the strings you are buying are correct for you ukulele.

Natalie Merchant’s New Album

Natalie Merchant, the once singer-songwriter for the 10,000 Maniacs, who eventually went out on her own as a great success, has now come out with her next album – “Leave Your Sleep”. Nonesuch Records stated the album was released worldwide April 13. Promoting the album, Merchant is performing a series of release parties and concerts in several major American cities.

Natalie Merchant was born in Jamestown, New York. Her mother encouraged her to study music and wouldn’t allow her four children, including Natalie, to watch TV until they were 12. Merchant said they were taken to the symphony often, as her mother loved classical music. Merchant admits she didn’t know much about any other type of music beyond classical and show-tunes, music her mother loved.

In 1981, Merchant started singing for a band called “Still Life”, which later changed their name to “10,000 Maniacs”. In 1993 she left the group to go out on her own. By 1995 she released her album “Tigerlily” which contained the famous single called “I May Know The Word”. The song was to appear on the soundtrack for the movie Philadelphia but was later cut. “Beloved Wife”, another song off of “Tigerlily” was featured in the trailer for the movie Message in a Bottle. The album also contained the song “River”, dedicated to River Phoenix, whom she defend and castigates the media for sensationalizing his death. Tigerlily was a success and pushed her single “Carnival” into the top 40 of singles. The album sold over 5 million copies.

After three years, Merchant released her second album “Ophelia”. This album would contain a lot of symphonic arrangements composed and conducted by British composer Gavin Bryars. Thirty different musicians were featured on the album. The album was meant to describe a series of women throughout time, who dared to question the patriarchal status quo and were often castigated. Merchant described “Ophelia” as being at once a “novice Carmelite”, a “suffragette”, a “circus queen,” a “demigoddess” and a “mafia courtesan.” The first single of the album “Kind and Generous” received massive airplay on VH1. Merchant also joined Sarah McLachlan performing in Lilith Fair, which helped push her album into Platinum status in under a year. Singles “Break Your Heart” and “Life Is Sweet” received only moderate airplay. Merchant made appearances on VH1, PBS and Hard Rock Live that year as well.

Merchant’s third album would be “Motherland”, released in 2001. The album achieved Gold on the Billboard charts with singles “Just Can’t Last, “Build A Levee” and “Tell Yourself”.

After “Motherland”, Merchant did not resign with her record company but released her next album “The House Carpenter’s Daughter” under her own label, Myth America Records. This was in 2003. Merchant later decided to resign with Nonesuch Records and now, in 2010, we see her album “Leave Your Sleep” being released. Financial Times claims “the album is a double album of poems set to music the traverses the whole range of American vernacular, from Bluegrass to Cajon to miniature chamber music, and beyond.?
